Bus Stop Safety: A Guide for Riders and Parents

DATTCO is committed to providing safe and reliable transportation to our riders. As a part of that commitment, we want to emphasize the importance of bus stop safety. Whether you’re a regular rider or a parent of a young student, understanding and practicing safe habits at the bus stop can help prevent accidents and ensure a positive commuting experience.

Before the Bus Arrives

  • Arrive Early: It’s always best to arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival time. This gives you ample time to find a safe spot to wait.
  • Maintain Distance: Stand at least ten feet away from the curb, preferably on a sidewalk or designated waiting area. This helps avoid accidents when the bus pulls up.
  • Avoid Running or Playing: The bus stop is not a playground. Refrain from running, playing games, or engaging in other activities that could lead to accidents.

Getting On and Off Safely

  • Wait for a Complete Stop: Never attempt to board or exit the bus until it has come to a complete stop.
  • Use Handrails: When boarding or exiting, use the handrails for stability and to avoid falls.
  • Listen to the Driver: Always follow the driver’s instructions and wait for the signal before getting on or off.

Always Use Caution Around the Bus

  • Never Walk Behind the Bus: Walking behind a bus can be dangerous, as the driver may not be able to see you.
  • Cross Safely: If you need to cross the street, do so at a designated crosswalk or a place at least ten feet in front of the bus. Ensure traffic has stopped and it is clear to cross.
  • Make Eye Contact: Before crossing, make eye contact with the bus driver to make sure they see you.
  • Avoid Picking Up Dropped Items: If you drop something near the bus, don’t attempt to pick it up. Inform the driver immediately, and they can assist you.

By following these simple guidelines, you can help create a safer environment for everyone at the bus stop. Remember, safety is a shared responsibility. Together, we can make our community’s transportation system a safer place for all.
